Hello, I’m Ashley Newman, owner and teacher at Union Pilates.
My exploration of Pilates began when I was in high school, after I started having pain in my low back during Ballet classes. After being diagnosed with scoliosis, a physical therapist encouraged me to begin practicing Pilates to strengthen my core as a way to counteract the innate imbalance in my body caused by my crooked spine. This introduction proved to be the only thing that gave me lasting relief from the painful and frustrating symptoms of scoliosis.
After graduating from Scripps College in Southern California, I moved to Seattle and started working out at Metropolitan Pilates. Shortly thereafter, I decided to enroll in their teacher-training program — one of the best and most rigorous of its kind in the world.
Training under Master Teacher Dorothee van De Walle at her home studio was a life changing experience. Not only did I learn the theory and practice built by Joseph Pilates, I also began a new path towards healing my body. After a year-long apprenticeship, I went on to work at some the best Pilates studios and gyms in Seattle, including Metropolitan Pilates, Washington Athletic Club, and founding the Pilates program at Club Zum.
In the fall of 2013, I opened Union Pilates in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood with a vision to deliver high quality Pilates to a larger, more diverse community.
When I’m not teaching Pilates, you can find me riding my bike all over Seattle, enjoying the parks and waterfront by foot, practicing Yoga, and cooking delicious (and healthy) meals.
